8th Grade Art

4- I took the time and fully developed my idea so that all composition, materials, and elements and principles used enhance the meaning or message
3- I developed my idea so that almost all composition choices, materials, and elements and principles used enhance the meaning or message
2 - I should have taken more time to develop my idea because only some composition, elements and principles, or materials choices fit my idea.
1- I didn't properly develop my idea so many choices are unrelated to the meaning.

Learning targets

Picture
I can explain how I or another artist created message or mood through materials, subject, visual choices, and approach.

I can evaluate artwork and support it with a convincing and logical artwork.

I can take risks in my artwork.

I can document my process using digital media

8th Grade - Places and Spaces

For this next project, you will need to focus on the concept or theme of Places and Spaces. This can be translated in a lot of ways, but I want you to focus on a space or place for at least one of the works you make. Using the Creative Process, plan and enact what it is you want to make to explore the concept or theme of places and spaces. You get to select the media and methods in which to work.

Start out by answering the following questions in your brainstorming:
  1. What is an environment?
  2. How much does location/climate/time impact a place or space?
  3. How are interior spaces different or similar to exterior spaces?
  4. What impact do environments have on those that exist in them?

Following the Creative Process, it is time to research and see how others have tackled this problem before sketching out several possible solutions to the problem of creating a work that explores the concept of Environment (space or place).

Examples by other Middle Schoolers

Artist to Note:

Vincent Van Gogh

Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter that struggled with painting all of his career. He was not famous in his lifetime, nor was he well-liked or popular. He had a hard time making friends, but his paintings are among the most famous in collections across the globe. He is most known for his bold use of color and texture as he painted still life, portraits, and landscapes. When looking at the following works, consider how he activates the space in the image through the repetition of line and shape. Also examine how he transforms the environment in which he is observing to say something about how he feels about the space and place that he is capturing through paint.

Ansel Adams

Ansel Adams (1902-1984) was and is one of the most influential black and white photographers. His use of contrast, grey scale, and lighting in his work has influenced photographers and politicians alike. His photographs of wild lands helped inspire the National Parks system and protect those lands from development and industry so it could be enjoyed for generations to come. When looking at his photography, it is important to understand that he did not just take a picture and develop it as is - he spent hours in the dark room, working with dodging and burning techniques to get the dramatic impact he was looking for when showing the beauty of the landscape.

Georgia O'Keefe

American painter, Georgia O'Keefe (1887-1986) is best known for her enlarged flowers and abstractions of the landscape. She was one of the few well-known female painters of her era and used her surroundings to inspire her work. Whether she was in New York or Santa Fe, she was inspired by and used her environments to create her work. When looking at the images below, notice the way she uses color, shape, and value to fill the space in an interesting way. What do you think she is trying to say about the environment through the color, composition, and way she paints it?

David Hockney

British artist David Hockney is interested in using various materials to create his art. In the past, he would use a camera and create a photomontage of a place by taking a lot of pictures and piecing them together. He has also worked with paint to capture moments in spaces. Now he is using digital painting to create large landscapes by drawing on an iPad and having them enlarged. When looking at his work, notice what is similar or different about each piece as he evolves his ways of capturing environments.

Nathan Walsh
Contemporary realist painter, Nathan Walsh, is interested in creating hyper realistic paintings of exterior spaces. He uses 2-point perspective drawing to do this as well as close attention to detail and mastery of materials. When looking at his work, notice the reflections, shadows, and use of light to capture the space in a believable way. Also pay attention to the sharp lines and use of color to give a heightened sense of reality.
