Project 3: Perceiving relationships

For this project, you will be coming up with an original drawing that shows off your skills in sighting proportions and angles.  The subject matter that you choose is up to you, and you may focus on formal or informal perspective, or sighting relationships using angles within a subject.

LEARNING TARGETS:
  • I can use the artistic process to come up with an idea to make a ceramic vessel.
  • I can use my knowledge of ceramic building techniques to select the best construction method and create a plan for building my project
  • I can construct a ceramic piece showing mastery of my chosen technique and good craftsmanship.

Step 1: Brainstorm and Investigate

Decide what you are going to make!  Use sketches or writing to generate ideas for your topic.  You should also be researching other artists or work to show where you got your inspiration.  Your blog post should explain how you are connecting your piece to other artwork and experiences. Your piece should also communicate a message and you will need to decide what that message is.  Remember that good brainstorming involves coming up with as many ideas as possible even if they are bad!

When you are done complete Peer Critique 1 with a partner.

Step 2: Organize and Develop

Now that you have narrowed down to one idea, how are you going to visualize it? You may need to begin by taking or compiling reference photos or bringing in an object.  Begin by using thumbnail sketches (10+) to plan your composition, considering the elements and principles of design.  Remember you are not changing ideas at this point, just playing with how to use the space on the paper.  You will also want to think about your line styles, materials, size,  and whether or not you are gong to use color.  Remember that you should be able to explain how your choices relate back to your message! Also be conscious of where your risk taking is going to come in to your piece. When you have made a decision complete a final sketch of your composition.  You will explain this and all of your thinking in your blog post

Step 3: Begin to create

Start your project.  At some point check in and post about how it is going.

Step 4: Revise and Refine

Once you have gotten your critique feedback from your partner, you should make improvements and adjustments to your piece.  Once you have problem solved any remaining issues, complete your blog post.

Step 5: polish and present

Photograph your piece and write your artist statement.  Put both in your digital portfolio
